Putting Gratitude into Perspective with Teddy Droseros

The health benefits of gratitude and meditation are incredible and the way that it can change your life is even more amazing!

I know personally when I started incorporating daily habits into my own routine that create a more positive space, people started asking me what my secret was. The energy shift was felt through the personal interactions I was having, but it was also felt through my Social Media posts across the country. I knew I was different, but I didn’t know that other people could tell I was different until I started receiving messages asking me, “What are you doing differently? What is the secret?”

One of the best gifts I ever gave myself was to work on developing a fierce mindset. Nobody teaches us this in school, so I had to do some soul searching to even realize that this was a problem for me before I could start to solve it. I truly believe that this is the point in my journey where people started to notice that I was different. I didn’t really feel like I was different, I felt like I was finally myself. You can read more about how I developed my own relationship with gratitude here.

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting Teddy Droseros, founder of Grateful Peoples.

Have you ever met someone and you just know in your heart that they are going to change the world? That is how I felt when I met Teddy.

Grateful Peoples was founded with a mission to give back and share how he learned to create real happiness in his own life and to inspire others to do the same. He has already inspired so many! I see his journals in coffee shops throughout New York City with signs asking people to share what they are grateful for and it creates this sense of community in a city of over 8 million people. He is also working with local school districts to bring gratitude into the classroom and I know that the benefits of doing so are going to be exponential. I wish someone had taught me about gratitude when I was in high school and I am so excited to have met a changemaker like Teddy who is making that wish a reality.

Here are a few thoughts from my meeting with Teddy that I wanted to share with you so you can incorporate more gratitude and positive vibes in your day to day life:

How were you first introduced to the idea of practicing gratitude?

My relationship with gratitude has played a major role in bringing me to where I am today - the most peaceful I’ve ever felt. About four years ago, my brother told me about an idea to write down a nightly list of things I was grateful for and the potential health benefits that would follow. Sounded simple enough, so I gave it a try. Within only a few weeks I was beginning to recognize the life-changing power behind this simple practice. I remember coming up from the NYC subway feeling unsettled about the day ahead. After processing my thoughts, I noticed something really cool and significant. My mind had instinctively gravitated toward a more positive place, but in a way that I had never experienced before. It truly felt like a subconscious decision. By default, I chose to have a more positive response to what I was feeling. It was a sensation and experience I’ll never forget as it made me realize that we all have a special ability to hardwire our brains for happiness. All we need to do is train our minds and program it with the right thoughts.

We know that gratitude has so many benefits for health and wellness, what are some of the benefits you have personally experienced?

Since that morning, gratitude has become one of my closest companions. I bring her with me wherever I go because she reminds me that I can’t always control what happens to me, but I can control how I feel about it. She helps me gain control over my thoughts so I can be more resilient and adaptable to whatever life throws my way. A consistent gratitude practice is the foundation for a joyful life and has put me in a better position to love, learn, and grow in any situation!

How have you made the practice of gratitude a daily habit in your own life?

Every morning, I make sure to set aside a few minutes to sit in silence and think about all of the blessings that surround me. The more I do it, the more I see. That’s why gratitude is so powerful. It teaches me how to live in the present moment and continuously opens up a new world of super cool perspective. The most important thing I’ve learned is that we all have the power to let our imagination create our reality, and a mind full of gratitude is what brings us closer to that power!
